NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:43]

NM interview: 24/1 1pm slot.

Profile: GEM, bad acads, 258. 2 years at Wipro as software dev.

A: Good morning varshith!

V: Good morning Ma’am, How are you?

A: I am good, thank you! So give me a very crisp intro about you.

V: a crisp intro about growing up in different cities, my undergrad, and work(Wipro & client FedEx, what I like to do in my free time)

A: Who are the main competitors of FedEx?

V: UPS ma’am and since 1½ year Amazon has turned from a business partner into a Major competitor.

A: how are they doing since the pandemic?

V: Ma’am FedEx actually was hit very hard, once due to Covid and another time due to the

The tornado outbreak in March 2020, which was the 6th worst Tornado ever to Hit the US. It disrupted the operations and caused a data loss as well.

A: So if you were in a decision making role, how would you handle such a situation and do the disaster management

V: Ma’am as the clientele who use FedEx Warehouse for assembling and logistics services have mandated the Data not to be stored in the cloud servers but in the warehouse, I would like to propose having a backup in a different location, so that we can be up and running in a short while.

Secondly, the location isn’t optimal as few tornadoes and hurricanes have hit the east coast and maybe shifting the warehouse to the inner region would be optimal.

A: So, What are the three major issues that America faces currently?

V: (Asked for 30 seconds).

Ma’am the three issues are

Wealth gap ( said about the trends in last few decades and how it is problematic)

Healthcare not being affordable

Education prices (over $1.6 trillion, that’s almost like 60%+ of the Indian economy)

A: Why is healthcare an issue, they have good healthcare right

V: Ma’am their healthcare infra is obviously state of the art and they employ bleeding-edge tech. But the point becomes moot as a lot of the people aren’t able to afford it and in fact has left many people bankrupt. Many resort to health tourism due to it.

We can see how important health and well-being are and especially during the Covid it has been made very obvious. Also, comparing the US with its contemporaries like other developed countries like in Scandanavia, UK, etc, the social welfare insurance covers your healthcare and you don’t have to pay anything. We can see how it has translated to the peace of mind with Scandanavians being happiest. Having a basic need like healthcare in jeopardy can be very detrimental to one’s life. ( I think I went a little too long here but she seemed interested and so)

A: Ok, I am done P2 please take it from here.

V: Thank y--

A: but one last question and I want an answer in a single line. Was Brexit a success or a failure

V: Yes, It is hard to be giving it a strong word like success or failure but I would incline towards the fact it is a bit negative. (RIP one-line answer). Ma’am if we compare the EU with India(27 member states and 28 states), They are of a similar size and it is obvious that if a state is separated from India it would be beneficial for it. Also, a lot of the corporate and other agreements must be resolved and it will be a bureaucratic issue. Also said about Ireland issue.

A: Ok, Thank you Varshith

B: What does your name Varshith mean.

V: ma'am it's a derivative from the word 'varsh' which in essence is rain. Coming from a familial roots in farming roots, I was named so being born during the rainy season.

B: oh, that's nice!

B: So, Varshith you mentioned in SOP about working in Wipro under Philanthropist Azim Premji and in a college headed by humanitarian Mata Amma, What social tasks did you do? Elaborate on them.

V: told about how i taught underprivileged students, explained with STAR approach. Discussed a little on this

B: So what specialisation you are interested in?

V: I will decide in my second year as I'll be due to the information available at stage, I'll be able to make a more informed decision.

B: Who is your role model?

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:43]

V: it's a strech to call him my role model, but someone who inspires me to do better and improve myself consistently is Elon Musk.

B: *she laughs* I don't need to ask my follow up question, I know the answer.

V *I smile back sheepishly*

B: you know everything about him yes? His life and career

V: Yes!

B: (she turns to other faculty) 'for all Elon musk seems to have become the role model' and they smile.

V: I agree ma'am. It's once in a life time opportunity to be able to witness such landmark events akin to Moon landing or first flight by Wright brothers. I'm fascinated by his ability to dream ludicrously big and deliver on it.

B: what will you do differently if you are Elon Musk

V: not sure if I could do anything better.. (I get cut and snap out of my fanboy phase)

B: not just his business aspects. Anything different over his lifetime, you would do if you were Elon musk(I wish).

V: (after thinking for a while) ma'am I think the way he communicated, I would probably do it differently.

B: *raises eyebrows and stares*

V: ( I felt I may have come across as insensitive as he seems to having issues talking as in not in a smooth manner) I made it clear by saying not the way he says , but rather what he says. Like in certain circumstances we are expected to behave and speak in a certain manner, eh a meeting or an interview.

For example, a day back he spoke about bitcoin being too high when he has invested it and lost 15B$. Definitely not something I would do

B: (laughs) yes that was a bit..

V: and it wasn't the first time, he had already tweeted in the past that Tesla's share was a bit too high. Not so appropriate. And also has told about how he expected Tesla to fail and his purpose was to make a statement that electric cars can be cool. Again, if I was looking to build my company or get some funding, not the sort of statements I would be making.

B: yeah, he does seem to be making such statements. This we knew, thought you'll say something else.

C: What do you do in your free time.

V:  I read books and articles predominantly on Tech, Science, Wildlife and History. Also I am an avid gamer and interested in the upcoming eSports scene. When I get time I like traveling and exploring new places.

C: what games you play

V: I play RTS and MOBA games(explained about them without the jargon, but saw that she was not exactly sure what I was telling about, so added PUBG)

C: so what you play now that PUBG is banned.

V: I have shifted to other battle royale games like Paladins, Fortnite and COD

(As she was about to speak, I cut her unintendedly to add about Fau G being released as an alternative, but yet to try it)

C: chuckles and tells she was about to ask Fau G review.

V: yet to play it ma'am. Maybe I will after the interview.

C: So tell me in your 3 strengths and weakness

V:

Interpersonal skills

Persistent

Hopeful

And my weaknesses are

I have stage fright

I am not good with multi tasking.

C: (cutting me) do you think multi tasking is a hoax?

V: I am not in a position to say it's a hoax as I'm not really experienced or good in it. But yes certainly weak in it.

C: how are you working on it?

V: I tried to, but doing two or more tasks concurrently has made me sub optimal in both, so I have sort of shifted my approach where I do tasks in a sequential manner and shift between them if I feel like I want change or so and this has made efficiency better. (Finished and kept quiet)

C: you forgot the third weakness.

V: yes ma'am, I have to work on procrastination.

C: how are you doing that?

V: by planning my day and having a structured schedule.

C: how?

V: I would try to simulate the feeling of an approaching deadline but splitting the big task into multiple smaller tasks and setting deadlines for them seperately.

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:43]

Every night, I plan the goals and a rough structure for the next day and assess how it's been executed everyday and over a long time period, based on which I make adjustments. (Added a bit more on some learnings from recent planning)

This structure has helped to improve.

C: that's it varshith from my side. Good luck

Remaining two faculty wish luck. I thank then and log off.

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:43]

Millions of new jobs will emerge in health care and tech as society ages and digital transformation changes the nature of work. According to the US Labor Department’s projections for employment in 2029, jobs will be taken up by older adults in the health-care and high-tech fields. This is revealed from expert interviews, historical data and other sources. They have estimated demand for specific occupations, combined with macroeconomic modeling to anticipate changes in the economy’s structure. Taking care of an aging population—and their pets—and working on the nation’s digital transformation are likely to offer the most well-paying job opportunities in the next decade. Their forecast suggests that home aide and restaurant jobs are expected to grow by the millions, but these jobs tend to pay among the lowest wages. Individuals looking for work in office support and manufacturing fields will find fewer positions. The only workers who will find a job market welcoming are those who go for higher education and are willing to refresh their skills. Part of that growth—driven by baby-boomer aging—will occur in better paying jobs, such as nurse practitioners. The digital transformation of jobs will convert manufacturing dominated jobs into services sector dominated jobs. *

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:44]

Telecom service providers in India are competing to meet the demand for news at zero cost. Collection of news as events unfold cost money. Scientists who track the health of penguins on the ice-covered wastes of Antarctica are managing their cameras from thousands of miles away—via tiny satellites orbiting above our heads. Energy companies are exploring the use of the same technology for monitoring hard-to-reach wind farms; logistics companies for tracking shipping containers; and agribusiness companies for minding cattle. In the near future, it isn’t unreasonable to imagine this evolving technology could put a distress beacon in every automobile, allowing remote monitoring of wildlife in any environment on earth. One can imagine a track of your interest just like tracking your Amazon shipment. This technology is being enabled not by giants like SpaceX but by the active space program of India. The reusable rockets have reduced the cost of launching a satellite in the earth orbit.

It is the work of a dozen or so startups who are building their own networks of nanosatellites. The financial viability of such ventures, however, remains to be ascertained in the coming time.

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:44]

The advent of new technology-aided learning tools such as smartboards, MOOCs, tablets, and laptops, etc. has transformed the way education is being imparted in schools and colleges. The internet of things (IoT) is further proving to be one of the most cost-effective ways to educate young minds. It is also a powerful system to integrate a world-class learning experience for everyone. The edu tech companies are constantly working to find innovative solutions to increase access to education for people who currently are struggling to get proper education facilities. The population of young people from across the world, reported having taken online courses in the past, is ever-expanding. The best part of digital education is that you can create resources just once and use it multiple times for generations to come, thus saving on a lot of resources and efforts. At the same time, digital education empowers teachers to customize educational products based on the personalized need of individual learners. Digital education is also helping in pioneering the concept of collaborative learning where all the minds can converge to create a unique learning experience that transcends national boundaries. Universities and colleges have launched digital tools to foster access to education online in order to bring social inclusion. The state of education in India is dismal, especially in rural areas. The sector is currently battling with grave challenges such as outdated teaching methods, shortage of teachers, inadequate student-teacher ratio, and insufficient teaching resources. There is no doubt that digital education is a panacea for India’s education sector. *s

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:44]

According to recently published data, the total R&D expenditure in India as percentage of GDP has been stagnant at 0.6 to 0.7 per cent in the last two decades — much lower than the US (2.8 per cent), China (2.1 per cent), South Korea (4.3 per cent) and Israel (4.2 per cent). Fortunately, agriculture is one of those rare sectors where India has a well laid out network of research institutions with plenty of skilled human resources. The National Agricultural Research System of India includes some 27,500 scientists and more than 1,00,000 supporting staff, actively engaged in agricultural research, which makes it probably the largest research system in the world. Agriculture Science and Technology Indicators (ASTI) data reveal that India currently spends 0.30 per cent of agriculture GDP on agricultural research. For China, this figure is 0.62 per cent. As far as public spending on agricultural R&D is concerned, India is not far behind China. The share of private spending on farm research in China is much higher. In India, with an estimated 20 per cent share of private sector on agricultural research, the scene is not that bleak either. India should not worry about agriculture research now

Today's WAT

Having become some of the world’s most valuable corporations, giant tech companies face accusations of anti-consumer behavior, privacy violations and failing to stem the growing tide of disinformation on their platforms. In the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) model, developers essentially rent everything they need to build an application, relying on a cloud provider for development tools, infrastructure, and operating systems. This is one of the three service models of cloud computing. PaaS vastly simplifies web application development; from the developer's perspective, all backend management takes place behind the scenes. Although PaaS has some similarities with server-less computing, there are many critical differences between them. The list of U.S. antitrust cases against big technology companies is growing longer. As many as 38 states in the US have lawsuits against Google. There is no doubt that Big Tech must be broken up into smaller units to achieve competition

BTech cse gem fresher

3 panelists 2 male 1female

So the first panelist started with questioning me through my sop he asked why should you be here at NMIMS how did you decide going for an MBA, why are you not an excellent students and stuff like that. More or less he wanted to know whether I'm clear with why MBA.

Female panelist: ask about the vaccine issue and put me in a situation said you're ceo of a pharmaceutical company tell me decisions you'll take and the business perspective of those to solve the vaccine crisis.

She seemed happy with my response.

2nd male panelist

Asked me about me btech background. Again situational questions what would you advice to a 1st year student what to study how to move forward in the industry.

Which languages are you familiar with. Usage of python have you ever worked on it. How do you stay aware with news and current affairs. Then he asked a question that about someone related to banking sector I wasn't aware so I said sorry sir I'm not sure. And then it was over.

A little cross questioning happened but not much

NMIMS PI (19/02, 8.30 slot)

10th/12th/Grad - 9/9/8

NMAT - 248

Mentioned HR preference in SOP

Three panelists. 1 female (F), 2 male (M1, M2)

F was smiling.

M1 and M2 were laughing throughout.

M2 was trying to counter my answers.

F - Why Java is so popular?

(Mainly because it is platform independent)

F - If you had to have a trait like that, what would it be?

(Being able to communicate and get along with people. Because technically, java is popular because no matter the platform, it is able to communicate with the system)

F - So you mentioned you want to do HR, is communication the only important trait?

(No ma'am, but I believe it's the first important step)

F - So what are the other traits that you have that would make you a good HR?

(Spoke about empathy)

F - Okay, over to you sir

M1 - I'm sorry I have to take this conversation forward because it is very intriguing. You spoke about empathy right. So what's the difference between sympathy and empathy?

(Sympathy is more like acknowledging, but empathy involves understanding)

M1 - So you know there are different roles of an HR. Which one would you ideally like to do?

(Told that I would be really interested in being able to devise policies)

M2 - So the role of HR is not only devising policies right, there's more to it. And you're supposed to be ready to do all of it.

(Yes sir, I completely agree. I do want to understand an organisation's needs, pick the right people and be involved in training them. I mentioned devising policies because that would be my favourite part of the entire process)

M2 - So how would you resolve conflicts within an organization? Say an employee complains saying his leaves are not approved by his manager, but his co-workers leaves are.

(Started by saying how I usually consider every stakeholder in a situation while decision making, and would apply the same here)

M2 - So it's again about empathy. Would you want to take a Twitter poll everytime there's a problem? *Laughs extra*

(Sir I think it is important to hear everyone out in a situation. Because I'm not in the situation, and I wouldn't be able to make the right decision unless I know everyone's point of view. Maybe the manager is approving the other employee's leaves because he has been consistently meeting deadlines, but maybe the one who complained has pending work. It's not a wise thing to do, but it's just an example. It is important that I know what's happening)

M2 - Okay I think you've made your point *continues laughing*

M1 - Okay thank you, have a nice day! You can leave the meeting

F - Thank you Aksshaya

1pm WAT TOPIC

Tally of Engineering- Colleges in India is as follows: Andhra Pradesh (431), Assam (33), Bihar (50), Chhattisgarh (26), Delhi (37), Goa (8), Gujarat (138), Haryana (105), Himachal Pradesh (15), Jammu and Kashmir (32), Jharkhand (23), Karnataka (485), Kerala (117), Madhya Pradesh (169), Maharashtra (556), Manipur (3), Mizoram (3), Orissa (132), Pondicherry (18), Punjab (108), Rajasthan (90), Sikkim (4), Tamil Nadu (525), Tripura (3), Uttar Pradesh (241), Uttaranchal (44), West Bengal (124)A large number of engineering graduates in the country are not in a position to have gainful employment at present and the number of such engineers is likely to grow in the future. This happened due to proliferation of engineering colleges in the country, thereby lowering the quality of the engineering graduates. More than 80% engineering graduates are non-employable. The government can exercise one alternative: closing down colleges ill-equipped to impart quality education. As a matter of fact, nearly 180 professional colleges, including engineering institutes and business schools, have shut down during the academic year 2020-21, the highest number of closure of technical institutions in the last nine years, according to All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) data. Another alternative is to launch attractive employment generation schemes and encourage these graduates to opt for such schemes to use their expertise and knowledge effectively. This is a short-term solution to provide them some employment. The best solution will be that these students should go back to colleges, learn and pass exams again and come back to the job market. In the long-term, these students would be able to make progress in line with their abilities.

NMIMS PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:44]

We are now almost 20 years removed from the events of 9/11 – the destruction of the World Trade Centre in New York. In the last few years, multiple terrorist attacks around the globe have provided near constant reminders of the endless stream of threats that seem to abound. The psychological fallout of these attacks is complex. We know that for many people immediately affected, life will never be the same and the world will feel like a very scary place for a long time to come. We also know that the impact of these events is not limited to those who tried to escape the Manchester arena or run across the London Bridge — people everywhere are jumpy, hyper-vigilant and anxious. The fear of another attack is something that has become embedded in our collective consciousness, whether we realize it or not. Hence, it is not possible to mitigate adverse impact of terrorism on the human psyche now.
