XAT: 99.2832 %ile
Work Ex: 2.5 years in TCS Research and Development Labs as a Machine Learning Researcher.
Pleasantries exchanged.
P1: What is it that you do at TCS Research?
C: Explained
P1: Explain the nature of research you do.
C: Explained that my role is primarily concerned with automating certain processes in the Software Development Life Cycle using AI.
P1: Is it true that employees are pushed into R&D?
C: Countered this saying that it's an on-campus placement and a niche technical role.
P1: How can AI be used in HR?
C: Talked about the domain of HR Analytics and certain companies like HUL using AI in their Recruitment and Screening process.
P3: Do you think these systems are self-sufficient?
C: Said that the insights provided by the system can be used together with human expertise.
P2 (suddenly pitched in): Have you heard of instances that these recruitment AIs have a bias towards the white people.
C (I did watch a documentary on this. Google up "Timnit Gebru"): Said that these systems aren't perfect and that they're still a work in progress. These systems give best results when working in tandem with human experts.
P1 (referring to one of my SOP answers): Good to see that you've mentioned about Performance Appraisal and SPEED platform (TCSers can relate).
(In my SOP, I did mention about reviewers being overburdened with reviews which results in not having a quality review for the employee-appraisal process).
P1: Do you think companies intentionally give a lot of reviews to a reviewer? What would you have done if you were in his/her shoes?
C: I said, I'd try to do each review sincerely.
P1: Come on. Be realistic. No one's that great.
C: (Fumbled a bit here.)
P1: Most of the ratings are average. Right?
C (Immediately realizing what he meant.): Yes, I agree. It's mostly a bell curve with average ratings being maximum. Extremely high and low ratings are rare.
P1: So, what would you do?
C: I'd mainly focus on these extreme reviews because subjective bias are more likely to be found here. (Favoritism or Personal grudge).
P1: Yes, performance ratings have often being subjected to emotional bias in the past.
P2: We also do research like you at XLRI. So, there are conference tiers, right? What if some researcher goes on publishing in Tier C conferences to maximize paper count. How would you as an HR deal with that?
C: Talked about our organization policy where in there is a catalogue of conferences to pitch in and one should always start from Tier A and go for lower tiers only upon rejection. Also, talked about Microsoft Research's mandatory at least one Tier A paper in a year policy.
P1: There shouldn't be an appraisal process in R&D. Only self appraisal is sufficient. What do you think?
C: Talked about certain technical metrics like citations, h-index, i10 index. However, working in corporate entails several other soft-skills as well. Most importantly, teamwork. So, in my opinion Appraisal is important.
P1: Who should appraise?
C: Ideally colleagues and Manager. In TCS, it's only Manager.
P1,P2, P3: Thank you for your time. Good Luck.
Interviewers seemed satisfied with my answers and kept on smiling.
Overall, a pretty friendly and engaging conversation type interview experience. No grilling as such but in depth analysis of SOP answers.

1) you are talking too much about agriculture. Tell me how to grow onions ?
2) so you don't have practical knowledge.
P3: (he came in after a long time.)
Gave me a case study about me being an investor in mining and how I'll deal with protesting tribals.
Other 2 panelists kept saying whatever i suggested won't work. Or just laughed 😂

Also talked about sales cut-off, operating expenses and payroll, giving instances of irregularities I had detected during my articleship)
P1: you are a freshly qualified and a young CA in terms of age. What I have noticed is that lot of CAs are so rigid. They only focus on accounting in everything. What do you think? Are you like that?
Said that I always aimed to go beyond the syllabus when I would study. The tutors I chose would always try to go beyond the book. Even during my articleship, I focussed on understanding the entity more than the accounting aspects. Also, have relocated multiple times as a child, so I am adaptable in general.
P1: You CAs are always lecturing. I know of cases where 5-6 CAs would be teaching accounting to one engineering girl. Why should we take such people to a B-School?
I said that since we have a strong understanding of finance, we will be better positioned to learn and do well in finance-oriented curriculums and jobs. Also, there are a lot of subjects in MBA which are not addressed in CA. So, we will show initiative to learn. I acknowledged that CAs have an ego or entitlement problem, but said I don't think I am in that basket.
P2: asked me a question based on a quote in my SOP. Few cross-questions asked me to relate it to my life.
P2: asked me why financial ratios are used? (Said comparability in terms of different companies and in terms of different time periods. Also, to establish relationships between items of the financial statements)
P3: you mentioned new subjects in mba when compared to CA? Which ones? (stats and maths for business)
P3: how do you know it is taught in B-schools? (Went through curriculum)
P3: when you looked at the curriculum, what did you pay attention to? (I said new subjects because we have touched upon a lot of aspects of accounting, laws and taxation in CA.)
P3: that is all? (I said I also paid attention to subjects that had a management orientation)
P3: which other calls? (Was honest and did not try to hide anything)
P3: gave me a maths problem and asked me to solve graphically (I said I don't know)
Interview Done.
PS: P1 was trying to sarcastically question my choices. However, he was smiling and laughing whenever I would make a jovial remark. It wasn't a stress interview as such. Occasionally, he was chewing peanuts and sitting in a very informal position. Aimed at putting me off perhaps.

M2 even pointed out that I am connecting from Mumbai, so AC would be on. I said no sir there is no AC in our house. Here even M1 was saying to M2, let him speak. Then they guessed the brand of my Blazer was Raymond and I mentioned it’s not Raymond and I bought it when I started my engineering xD. I don’t even remember all the things they pointed out. After one point I just let them finish and said with smile that I will look into my expenses and ensure I cut out some unnecessary things>

Panel 30 experience
He started with introduction and asked if I had placement offer.
P2 was very random for me, tried to put me under stress and cut me off at times laughing hastily, had my college in Goa so I was asked random geographical and historical questions about why IIT doesnt have a permanent campus, history of Goa, it was liberated later so about Portuguese and French colonies.
Then started asking me about renaming cities and my opinion about it, reasons and all that
Asked about football clubs in Goa.
P1 asked a few questions about Digital design, messed up a little but managed to draw a circuit of what he wanted.
No maths, No HR, no current affairs, it was very random and looked like P2 was trying to take a stress interview

Acads: 10/93.4/76 (BE Electronics and Instrumentation + MSc Economics from BITS Goa)
Workex: 18 months in finance (MSCI Index Research)
CAT: 99.93 %ile
2 Panelists, 1 Middle aged (P1) and 1 young (P2)
P1 started with the questions
1. A few basic questions about my degree and how it works
2. So you're from Goa, what is it famous for?
3. You said Goa is a sleepy town, then how are people partying late into the night? (I said nightclubs are open, but other businesses close early)
4. What are the industries in Goa? ( I said mining (he countered saying it is banned, and I said he is right), tourism)
5. What about pharma? I heard it is big in Goa? ( I said no idea about Pharma, but there are Chemical plants here)
6. What else did you do in Goa? (I misunderstood the question and he clarified that he wanted to know what my hobbies were. I said Table Tennis, Quizzing and Piano)
7. Since you claim to be a quizzer, let me ask you a couple of questions:
(a) Name a country in Latin America where they speak a language other than Spanish? I said they speak Portuguese in Brazil. He then said name another. I said no clue.
(b) Name country in Africa that is a part of the Organization de la Francophonie? I said Cameroon and he said ok and didn't ask me for another, thankfully.
8. Which school did you go to? What do you think of the Dravidian parties' performance in terms of economic and social indicators? Which party do you think is better?
9. Do you consider yourself an engineer or an economist? Asking so that my other panelist can decide where to ask you questions from.
He then handed it over to P2
1. What is adjusted present value? ( No idea)
2. How do you calculate the present value of an organization's tax shield? (or something along these lines, said I had no idea and hadn't studied this)
3. What is put call parity? What is the formula? (Answered)
4. Can you graphically prove it? (Solved it with the help of some hints from his side, but not sure he was fully convinced)
5. What is short squeeze? (Was going in to detail and he cut me off. Mentioned Gamestop and he asked me if I knew any Indian example of a short squeeze. I said I had no idea and he asked me what about Yes Bank. I said I didn't know that was what happened but it makes sense).
P1 jumps back in:
What other calls do you have? I said everything except Bangalore. He asked me why? I said tough to say because Bangalore's shortlisting formula is a little complicated, but I might have gotten it with another year of work experience. He countered saying that he knew multiple freshers who had calls and that workex isn't as important as you think and that these rumours take a life of their own. I clarified saying that I meant in my case, considering my average acads, another year of workex might have helped me in getting a call.
Finally asked me to show my ID and told me to leave.

I asked if this is so successful then even after more than 10 years since its launch why don't they mentor students from other marginalized sections or at least from PWD or EWS category as well. Then it was followed by a 5-6 mins long discussion in which both the panelists spoke for 3-4 mins and said the campus is inclusive and not immediately but probably in 5 to 10 years they will include other marginalized sections as well.
