SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

The thirteenth stroke here doesn't refer to military time but to an old saying. References to a thirteenth stroke of the clock indicate that some event or discovery calls into question everything previously believed. Put another way, the thirteenth stroke of the clock calls into question not only the credibility of itself but of the previous twelve.

But notice in this opening line that it isn't just one clock malfunctioning, but the clocks. Presumably all of them. In this world, the clocks striking thirteen is not an aberration, but a normal way of life.

In this way, Orwell subtly alerts the reader that statements of truth in this fictional society should be called into question.

SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

The significance of the "clocks striking thirteen" in the opening sentence of Nineteen Eighty-Four is, I think, bound up Orwell's view of England and Englishness, particularly when contrasted with the seemingly unstoppable rise of varying flavours of totalitarianism -Stalinism, Fascism, Nazism - at the time he wrote. He sees England as to some extent an exemplar of everything that totalitarianism wishes to crush.

A few years earlier, in 1941, Orwell had written an extended essay, The Lion And The Unicorn, in which he attempted to justify and reconcile his thorough-going and sincere ideas about Socialism with an equally sincere attachment to what he perceived as the essential goodness and comfort of life in England.

Orwell characterises England as "... solid breakfasts and gloomy Sundays, smoky towns and winding roads, green fields and red pillar-boxes ...". We are, he says, " ... a nation of flower-lovers, but also a nation of stamp-collectors, pigeon-fanciers, amateur carpenters, coupon-snippers, darts-players, crossword-puzzle fans." In discussion of the nature of liberty to be found in England, he notes that "It is the liberty to have a home of your own, to do what you like in your spare time, to choose your own amusements instead of having them chosen for you from above."

He readily concedes that England is riven with class division, inequality, hypocrisy, unfairness, exploitation; yet beneath those corrosive elements, he believed, there lies a fundamentally civilised outlook, common to those from all walks of life in England. It is worth quoting at length his views of the legal and electoral system: "In England such concepts as justice, liberty and objective truth are still believed in. They may be illusions, but they are very powerful illusions. The belief in them influences conduct, national life is different because of them. In proof of which, look about you. Where are the rubber truncheons, where is the castor oil? The sword is still in the scabbard, and while it stays there corruption cannot go beyond a certain point. The English electoral system, for instance, is an all but open fraud. In a dozen obvious ways it is gerrymandered in the interest of the moneyed class. But until some deep change has occurred in the public mind, it cannot become completely corrupt. You do not arrive at the polling booth to find men with revolvers telling you which way to vote, nor are the votes miscounted, nor is there any direct bribery. Even hypocrisy is a powerful safeguard. The hanging judge, that evil old man in scarlet robe and horse-hair wig, whom nothing short of dynamite will ever teach what century he is living in, but who will at any rate interpret the law according to the books and will in no circumstances take a money bribe, is one of the symbolic figures of England. He is a symbol of the strange mixture of reality and illusion, democracy and privilege, humbug and decency, the subtle network of compromises, by which the nation keeps itself in its familiar shape."

In Nineteen Eighty-Four recall that England is now Airstrip One, a mere adjunct to the totalitarian Oceanian empire, subject to the iron doctrine of Ingsoc, which is Newspeak for "English Socialism". Orwell was a socialist, but he strove to be a socialist with honesty and tolerance. Throughout the 1930s and 40s, he had become horrified at the steady corruption of the Left by totalitarianism, at the fact that his fellow socialists were now beginning to adopt the expedients of Soviet-style Marxist relativism: anything that the Soviet Union or its agents did was ipso facto good; any criticism of the Soviet Union was therefore reactionary propaganda. Objective truth was thrown out in favour of a slavish devotion to the Party Line. To his disgust, many seemingly sensible leftists in Britain and elsewhere began to do nothing but parrot the current line from Moscow: in 1938, Nazism was evil; in 1939, Stalin entered into a pact with Hitler to divide up Poland, so the Nazis were the trusted allies of the USSR, and all criticism of them should cease; in 1941 Nazi G

SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

ermany invaded the USSR, so once again Nazism was evil. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Oceania is at war with Eurasia (another totalitarian empire) and in alliance with Eastasia (yet another). Suddenly, overnight, the alliances switch: Oceania is at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. It has always been at war with Eastasia. Any attempt to point out that, yesterday, Oceania was at war with Eurasia is a wicked lie. Winston Smith's job is to falsify documentation to make it appear that the current Party line has always been true.

In Nineteen Eighty-Four we see the corruption of socialism taken to its ultimate extreme. "Good" is what the Party says is good. "Enemies" are the Party's enemies. Judges are no longer bound by time-honoured legal precedent - there is no law, only power. Your leisure activities are dictated to you by the Party. And throughout all of this, Winston Smith, despite being ostensibly a trusted member of the Party, cannot rid himself of the sense that something is deeply wrong, that we were not meant to live like this. Winston Smith is harking back to the lost world of Orwell's England. In this context we can see that "England" is not so much the true England of Orwell's day as a pervading metaphor for an idea of comfort, fairness, civilisation, rules, decency.

In that dimly-remembered past, church bells in every village would strike the hour - a necessity for a largely rural society where few possessed watches. One strike for one o'clock, two strikes for two o'clock, and so on through to twelve strikes for noon; and then on the next hour one strike, for one o'clock again. But under Ingsoc, a new, brutally rationalist timetable has been imposed: the clock strikes thirteen because it is the thirteenth hour of the day. Thirteen o'clock is the auditory analogue of the boot stamping on a human face, forever.

SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

13th stroke somewhat means that something wrong has happen during the strokes before that. And then, the photo was about achievements.

So I wrote on the lines that people do anything and everything possible to achieve what they want and how that is wrong. Related a bit with football, how only scoring a goal matters; with cricket, how only achieving the target matters. The means don't matter, the ends do.

Focussed on Lord Krishna's advice to Arjuna: "Karma karo, phal ki chinta mat karo." Something like that and how it has become the opposite today.

SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

I had some idea of how the thirteenth stroke relates to calling in to question the other 12.

Hence i started about how the beliefs of people keep changing every era. Then went on to illustrate about how womens right to vote was frowned about but the clocks struck thriteen as women demanded for not on their right to vote but also to work and this led to society being better in many ways. From there on i delved into how reforms brought about in many case have turned fruitful hence we should focus on the underlying economic problems of poverty and also the environmental problem of global warming that has been increasing even after the clocks concerning this have finally struck thirteen for many years.

SIBM-SCMHRD PI-WAT Experience, [05-09-2021 22:36]

I wrote about the pandemic and then how Isaac Newton discovered gravity and invented calculus while in quarantine and Shakespeare allegedly wrote King Lear in lock down. I related this to the pressure all of us felt to be productive every day of the lockdown and how some of us even vowed to code a new website or start our new side businessbusiness,  in addition to doing our actual jobs. Then I talked about the hustle culture we are forced to be a part of. Then I mentioned the constant barrage of confusing and overwhelming bad news can make us sick and exhaustsd, exacerbating underlying mental health conditions for those who have them blah blah blah . I was reminded that in addition to a productive employee, I am also someone who loves to cook and who has a passion for music. I remembered that I am more than the economic value I generate.... And then I related that sentence by saying... On a cold day.... hour.. Some of us were learning something new  or were having a nice lunch with the fam and some were even just waking upm

GD topic: Advent of Jio has made life though for other players. What do you think is the future for telecom industry as a whole?

A decent GD. We were given 1 min each to put our views and then it was an open house for like 10 min. While there is no fish market, don't have a laid back attitude as well. Keep making entries as and when you get opportunities.

PI panel was very kind and cracked jokes as well which made me feel very comfortable. A few questions that I remember :

Q. One incident where you did not take criticism positively?

Follow up Q. What changes this incident brought in you?

Q. Your weakness? Highlight this with a couple of examples?

Follow up Q: Are you doing something about it?

Follow up Q: If you don't feel comfortable with negotiations, how do you handle it?

Q. You scored 89% in graduation. How difficult was it? What was the score of person below you?

My suggestion: Be honest and back your case with examples. Tell them details you have command on as your PI will be built on it. Stay confident and clam as the PI panel for most of us were gentle.

P.S: Have typed it very quickly. Ignore grammatical/spelling mistakes.

WAT Topic: Combine the following two statements and write a coherent story/essay in 120-150 words (Duration 12 minutes) > Imagine if 1 USD = 1 INR > With great power comes great responsibility  Started with how Spider-Man is the local neighbourhood hero which is what separates him from other heroes. From there, I wrote about how caring for the local neighbourhood is important and how globalisation gave us the opportunity to open our doors to foreign products and competition. But the government often protects the industry and with the depreciating rupee, it becomes extremely difficult for imported goods to compete. So, in order to maintain a healthy market, there should be a level playing field. The govt has that power and with great power comes great responsibility.  GE Topic: 4 image tiles each having 200 points, 4 text tiles each having 100 points. With exactly 600 points, we had to create a story/narrative/essay  4 images: downward arrow showing fall (as they show in stock growth charts) and a car, a stick figure creating a blueprint and people giving them money, start ups different process, two people fighting for a piece pie 4 texts: A dime a dozen, India is a consumption driven economy and every product has a significant market potential, back to back changes in industry have impacted the consumer psyche, pandemic did not cause it but it just made it worse.  I used the first three image tiles. Talked about falling gdp, and how the economy seems like a car crash survivor. Then talked about how ideas are money and how the government is coming up with different ideas to boost the economy, one of them being Make in India and the recent slashing of corporate tax rate to as low as 22% and in some cases 15%. Also encouragement towards privatisation, FDI etc.

PI Process:

Extempore: I’m a brand manager. A new face serum is being launched but the manufacturer has only supplied half the order. What should be done?

Talked about increasing consumer anticipation, gave example of the brand ‘Supreme’ which releases its merch in very low quantity which has created a ‘hype culture’. An alternative would be to ask the manufacturer to subcontract the PO and get the shipment in, but the downside is higher costs.

P1: So you mentioned in your form that you determine the scale of operations. How do you do that? A: Actually I assisted the CFO in the same. What we used to do was invite quotations from the distributors regarding the demand, compare last year figures after adjusting it with the industry CAGR, and also take into consideration the seasonal cycle

P1: Tell me about your background P2: Who are the major competitors of your company in the eastern region? P2: How would you inflate your sales? A: Sir, firstly it’s unethical. Secondly it’s mostly done by issuing bogus invoices, or by creating fictitious debtors P2: Yes it’s unethical but how is it done? What’s the entry? A: Sir we can show Debtors Dr. to Sales in case of fictitious debtors P2: Yes but this would get caught A: We can also infuse black money by issuing bogus invoices for cash sales of small amounts and they would not get detected because of materiality norms followed by auditors. P2: That’s only half the answer I was looking for P1: What sort of poetry do you write? P1: Do you know what Haiku is? P1: Have you ever written a Haiku before? P1: What is the current rate of GDP? P1: What is the %age contribution of the manufacturing sector to the GDP? (did not know this exactly) P1: What can you tell us about the state of India’s forex reserves? (Did not know this) P1: What is the government doing to boost the manufacturing sector? (talked about different schemes that promote ease of doing business, lower corporate tax rates, faceless assessment of taxes, etc). P1: We get it that you know. It’s okay (laughs). WAT

WAT topic for today's morning slot was:-

1) You are sent back to stone age.

2) Change is inevitable,if u want to grow.

GE same 4 pics, 4 sentences 600 pts budget one. It went smooth as we didn’t cut anyone and came to a conclusion without much heated discussion.

PI-

There were 2 male panelists and one coordinator who when u enter the PI tells about it the extempore topic in zoom chat.

Extempore topic:- I am owner of a small restaurant. My head chef comes with two offers. One is we have 3-4 special dishes and appoint chefs who are master in them. Other one is we provide a generalized menu and then hire chefs accordingly. 45 sec to think, 1 min to present.

I chose the 2nd optn stating it will inc the customer base if we provide diff varieties which is being a small restaurant we should focus on building our customer base.

P1 asked all restaurants are providing meals like this then why would customer come to you? (Told will give discounts).

Asked what other thing u will do? (Told improving quality. And when people come seeing low prices and taste food then the mouth publicity will happen if I am providing quality food at less price.)

Asked if u decr price and inc quality very high won’t u be facing losses since it is a small restaurant?. (Told inc quality bt not the level of a 5-star bt a notch higher than the avg quality being provided in the competition). He said OK.

Then asked about my graduation when I completed it. (Told in 2020 only)

Asked what did u do further. (Told since my exam got over till oct so I prep for MBA only as management exams were lined up while giving some job interviews.)

Asked what happened then? Did u get any job? (Told gave of 2 companies, was not able to get in any of those). Asked reasons. Told.

Then P2 entered.

He also asked 2-3 qs based on my extempore ans.

Then he asked if I gave u 2 choices- 1) A job in high paying company but in an isolated area of Nagaland.  2) A moderate salary job but in your hometown. Which one would u select and why?

Told will go for 2nd option since I am living in my hometown I would be saving on rent and food expenditure so even in a moderate salary I would be able to save the similar amt had I been taking a high salary job in an isolated area. Along with that living in an area which I am comfortable in would help me inc my efficiency to do work.

He said ok that is nice. That’s all from our side. Thank you. Best of luck. U can now leave the meeting.

OA experience- The whole interview was based on the decision making skills I felt. They didn’t ask any technical qs or GK qs. Just how I make my decisions.
